Osaka is best known for incredible street food, historic landmarks, modern architecture, and the Universal Studios Japan theme park. This is your ultimate guide to exploring the top experiences in Osaka.

Things to Do in Osaka:

Osaka Castle

Osaka Castle is a historic landmark that was originally built in the late 16th century by Toyotomi Hideyoshi. The current main tower of the castle is a concrete reconstruction, completed in 1931, that showcases the original castle's imposing design. The castle is surrounded by Osaka Castle Park, which has picturesque landscapes during all seasons.

You can enter the main tower of the castle, which houses historical exhibitions detailing the history of Osaka Castle and the various rulers associated with it. The observation deck on the upper floors has beautiful panoramic views of Osaka and its surroundings.

Dotonbori

Dotonbori is a bustling entertainment district known for its neon lights, vibrant street life, and a myriad of restaurants, shops, and entertainment options. Exploring the energetic Dotonbori district at night is one the top things to do in Osaka.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Situated along the Dotonbori Canal, the district is characterized by illuminated signs and the reflection of lights on the canal. Dotonbori is a food lover's paradise, with a wide range of street food stalls, restaurants serving Osaka's famous takoyaki (octopus balls) and okonomiyaki (savory pancakes), and diverse culinary offerings.

Hozenji Yokocho Alley

Hozenji Yokocho alley is a picturesque and historic alley that is known for it narrow cobblestone streets, traditional Japanese lanterns, and array of small izakayas (Japanese-style pubs). Wander down the charming alley to discover eateries serving local Osaka specialties.

I would recommend a local robata grill called Robataki Mizukakechaya. Robata-yaki is a method of cooking in Japan where food, often skewered, is slow-grilled over hot charcoal. The term "robata" translates to "fireside" or "around the hearth," emphasizing the communal and cozy aspect of this cooking style.

Shinsekai

Shinsekai, meaning "New World, was developed in the early 20th century as a futuristic entertainment area, Shinsekai features a blend of retro and modern elements.

The district is known for its Tsutenkaku Tower, an iconic symbol of Osaka, offering observation decks with panoramic views. You will find many arcades and games in the streets of Shinsekai. Shinsekai has an ambience with narrow streets, traditional Izakayas (Japanese-style pubs), and local eateries serving kushikatsu (deep-fried skewers).

Universal Studio Japan

Universal Studios Japan is a popular theme park known for it's world-class attractions like the Wizarding World of Harry Potter and Super Nintendo World. The park has 10 distinct worlds that each have their own unique adventures. The park is easily accessible from the city by taking the train to Universal City Station.

Take a day trip to Nara Deer Park

Nara Deer Park, officially known as Nara Koen, is a vast public park located in Nara, Japan. It is known for its friendly and freely roaming population of Sika deer, which are considered sacred in the Shinto religion. The park encompasses several significant historical and cultural sites, including Todai-ji Temple, housing a colossal bronze Buddha statue, and the Kasuga Taisha Shrine with its enchanting lantern-lined paths.

The park's most iconic residents, the deer, are regarded as messengers of the gods in Shinto belief. You can enjoy interacting with these deer, feeding them specially provided deer crackers (shika senbei), and witnessing the charming sight of the deer bowing in return for a treat, a behavior they learned from the visitors. Nara is just a brief train ride away from Osaka, so it is easy to incorporate a day trip to Nara into your itinerary

Take a day trip to Kyoto

Kyoto is a cultural treasure trove where ancient traditions seamlessly blend with modern wonders. From serene temples and lush gardens to bustling markets, Kyoto has something for everyone. You can immerse yourself in the timeless beauty of Fushimi Inari Shrine, wander through the historic streets of Gion, savor traditional tea ceremonies, and indulge in the local cuisine.
